Torkham border reopens only allowing visa holders to cross

TORKHAM: After a 29-day closure, the Torkham border crossing reopens, permitting travelers with valid visas and urgent medical cases to pass through. The reopening brings relief to those stranded and restores a crucial travel and trade route between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Pakistani authorities confirm that only individuals with valid visas can cross, while those with identification cards alone are denied entry. Taliban officials in Nangarhar state that congestion is high but expect normal operations within days.

Initially set to reopen on March 21, the delay was caused by technical issues on the Pakistani side. Reports indicate that at least 4,000 Afghans have returned home since the border’s reopening, many without proper travel documents.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani delegation in Kabul continues discussions with the Taliban to address border challenges, as Pakistan sets a March 31 deadline for the expulsion of undocumented Afghan migrants.

Residents emphasize the economic importance of the crossing, urging diplomatic solutions to prevent future disruptions. The reopening underscores the gate’s significance for trade, travel, and regional stability.
